"Aloe Vera": A resurgence of the Ghanaian movie industry?
In the past few weeks several Ghanaian A list actors and actresses have been sharing photos on set of a production with an accompanying hashtag #AloeVera.
Aloe Vera is a movie being produced by Peter Sedufia and he announced in a moving post last month that shooting has wrapped up and the post production will now begin.
The cast is blend of of oldies, younger faces and and everything in between. I don't want to say they are middle aged 😊. So for the oldies we have names like like Kofi Adjorlolo, Akorfa Adjeani Asiedu and Fred Amugi. Aaron Adatsi from YOLO and the "Good Old Days" fame obviously represents the newer generation. We have many greats like Nana Ama McBrown, Naa Ashorkor Mensah Doku, Adjetey Annan,Gloria Sarfo etc representing a middle group.
If the pictures from the set that was build from ground up is anything to go by, it looks very exhilarating.
Even before "Aloe Vera", "The Burial of Kojo" by Blitz the Ambassador was released to great reviews. I have not seen that yet.
A second installment of the Perfect Picture will also be out this December to celebrate its 10th year production. I see RMD in there so I am excited as well as all the others from the first movie.
For some time now many actors and actresses in Ghana have complained about the dwindling fortunes of the movie industry. Even big production houses are not producing movies.
It's true that cd sales are down but I believe there are so many digital opportunities available now. I see an a few of our movies on Netflix. Will love to see more. I have also noticed that production houses like Ndani Tv and Red Tv are taking advantage of digital platforms to tell great stories In Nigeria. I love "Skinny Girl in Transit" and "The Men's Club " too probably because I have Mide and Shalewa in there still. Lol
If Kwaw Ansah's hugely successful the "The Good Old Days" and Blitz the Ambassador's "The Burial of Kojo" is anything to go by, I believe what producers must recognize is that Ghanaians are looking for authentic, layered and nuanced stories rather than the wishy washy stagnating romance stories of a few years back.
The future looks exciting for the Ghana Movie Industry.
Ps. I wrote this last year when Aloe Vera wrapped up with shooting but I never got around to posting it. I haven't seen it yet. Thanks to Coronavirus but I loved the trailer. The few reviews I read indicated that the story was quite straight forward but the great production and good feeling associated with the movie makes it worthwhile. I hope Peter Sedufia was able to make some profits.
